The South Jersey Transportation Authority is charged with a set of responsibilities unique among New Jersey agencies. First and foremost among those responsibilities is to provide the traveling public with safe and efficient transportation.

Proper performance of your responsibilities requires you to be aware of the importance of safety for yourself, your co-workers and the traveling public. The SJTA provides you with the safety equipment and training for various aspects of your job. However, it is up to you to use this equipment and knowledge so that you may do your job safely.

Remember that the loss from an accident affects the injured workers, families and co-workers. Keep one thing in mind no job is so important and no service so urgent that time cannot be taken to perform your work in a safe manner.

This Safety Manual, and the policies and procedures set forth herein, shall apply to all Authority employees, including supervisors, department heads, administration: but shall not apply to independent contractors. In the event of conflict between the policies and procedures set forth herein, and any collective bargaining agreement, personnel service contract, or federal, state county, or local laws, regulations or ordinances, the terms and conditions of that contract, law, regulation or ordinance shall prevail. In all other cases, the policies and procedures set forth herein shall apply.

In the event of the amendment of any federal, state, county, or local law regulation or ordinance incorporated into this document, or upon which these provisions rely, the policies and procedures set forth herein shall be deemed amended in conformance with those changes. The intent of the Safety Manual is to provide the best-known accident prevention information available.

THE AUTHORITY SPECIFICALLY RESERVES THE RIGHT TO REPEAL, MODIFY OR AMEND THE POLICIES AND PROCEDURES SET FORTH HEREIN AT ANY TIME. NONE OF THE POLICIES AND PROCEDURES SET FORTH HEREIN SHALL BE DEEMED TO CREATE A VESTED CONTRACTUAL RIGHT IN ANY EMPLOYEE OF THE AUTHORITY: NOR TO LIMIT THE POWER OF THE AUTHORITY TO REPEAL OR MODIFY THE POLICIES AND PROCEDURES SET FORTH HEREIN.

SAFETY should be foremost on your mind at all times. Employees will be governed by these standards and guidelines.

The Authority’s Safety Manager is charged with the responsibility for administering the Authority’s Employee Safety Program. Everyone’s cooperation is needed to help make our safety program a successful one so that you may have a safe place to work.

In addition to this Safety Manual, a number of Safety Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) have been developed to address the ever-changing workplace. The SOPs are included as Appendices to supplement the Manual with more detailed information.
